State Orientation Bureau (SOB) receives Royal Blessings on Advocacy against Vandalization of Public Properties

By Mr. Ijeh Henry

In continuation of the advocacy against vandalism on public properties, the State Orientation Bureau (SOB) has been commended for the initiative to bring to the front burner the un-wanton destruction of public properties by miscreants, who do not value the importance of such facilities.

The State Orientation Bureau received the royal support during their advocacy visits to the Palaces of HRM, the Okpara- Uku of Orogun Kingdom, Ovie Akpojotor Ekpo I; and his counterpart, the Ezehie of Ezionum Kingdom who doubles as the Chairman of the Ukwuani Traditional Rulers Council, HRM Dr. R.C. Osawuta (JP).

While addressing the Royal Fathers, the Director General of the Bureau, Barr Eugene Azuka Uzum, stressed that the importance of the advocacy visits cannot be over-emphasized following the prevailing wrong notion that government should be solely responsible for keeping the projects in communities in good shape, as well as, protect them from damage or theft.

The Director General, who was represented by the State Orientation Director, Mrs. Stella Macaulay, further stated that the advocacy visit was a wake-up call to all leaders and community members to appreciate their critical roles in ensuring long lasting life-span of  public utilities, be it, public schools, hospitals/health centres, markets, roads, electricity facilities, among others in their communities, especially in the face of uncountable pressing needs, aggravated by worsening global economy and lean resources of government.

Barr Uzum highlighted some situations where classrooms meant for children to learn were messed up with human waste, deliberate damage or outright stealing of school desks.  He said such situation was unacceptable, and consequently, called on leaders and community members to join hands to arrest the ugly trend.

Osawuta (JP) equally frowned at the deliberate destruction of public facilities, stressing that his community was doing everything humanly possible to deal with the situation, as such facilities were for the common good of his people.

Others present who spoke were the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Orogun, Obono Ndem (SP), Presidents-General of different Kingdoms, representatives of Chief Inspector of Education, leadership of Market Women Association in Ukwuani Council Area.

The Youth Council and Vigilante group among others applauded the bureau for the initiative, adding that Vandalization of Public Infrastructure in the community breeds retrogression in community development, stressing that “there was need to protect the facilities Government has provided for us”. As part of the way forward, they identified parental control and financial support as inducement to strengthen the weak structure of community vigilantes, as this would add impetus to curbing crimes at the grassroots.

During the question and answer sessions, stakeholders present made meaningful contributions towards taking ownership of projects in their communities, even as they implored the state government not to relent in assisting the communities in dealing with crimes by invoking the full weight of the law on offenders as well as, ensure that contractors who failed to execute quality jobs were brought to book.
